Best system design courses in 2026, compared
Checked October 30, 2026
Most system design courses prepare you for the interview round; a few also teach how the systems underneath behave. The table matches each course to the job in front of you, and the entries give format, price and trade-offs.

How we compared
We asked the same five questions of every course, Fanout's included:
- Depth: does it stop at the whiteboard, or explain how the parts work underneath?
- Practice: mock interviews, guided problems, quizzes or code.
- Format: text, video, or both.
- Price per year at list price, and whether there is a free preview.
- Refunds, where the provider states a policy.

Interview course or depth course?
They do different jobs. An interview course teaches a 45-minute answer shape and the problems that come up. A depth course teaches why the parts behave as they do, which is what interviewers probe in the follow-ups and what you need on call. Pair one of each: Hello Interview or ByteByteGo for the round, Designing Data-Intensive Applications or Fanout for the depth. Our system design books and resources guide covers the books.
