Star mathematical notation

A deliberately overloaded mark used for optimal objects, complex conjugates, adjoints, repeated strings, and named special cases.

Optimal object: Marks a parameter, action, or value selected as optimal under the surrounding objective. Example: Theta star names the optimal parameter choice.

Complex conjugate: Reverses the sign of the imaginary part of a complex-valued scalar or array entry. Example: Keep the real part and reverse the imaginary sign.

Adjoint: Denotes the conjugate transpose of an operator or matrix under the stated inner product. Example: Conjugate every entry and transpose the matrix.

Kleene star: In formal-language notation, permits any finite repetition count including zero repetitions. Example: Form every finite string made from symbols in A, including the empty string.

Special or reference object: Distinguishes a chosen canonical, target, or otherwise special object without asserting optimality. Example: The author has designated this particular x as special; nearby prose must say why.
